This month was just as interesting as January. I introduced my new model, my puppy ZaZu, and my husband finally let me take some pictures of him.

Dogs of the Glendale Chocolate Festival

Today I had the pleasure of attending the Glendale (AZ) Chocolate Festival which is held annually in February. Last year when I attended, I noticed that a lot of visitors brought their canine friends along for the fun. So this year I came prepared with my backpack full of camera equipment. As the afternoon wore on, I noticed how friendly everyone was when I asked them to photograph their pet. I wonder, was it the fact that dog owners are just that, more friendly, or did all that amazing chocolate have something to do with it?? I don’t know, just wondering.

I have set a SMART goal for myself to shoot a picture a day for each day of 2012. As you can see, the subjects of the images for January are quite diverse as I try out new things.

Joshua Tree Forest

The Joshua Tree Forest is quite interesting. You will find it about 30 miles north of Wickenburg on US 93. (Many Phoenicians have seen these trees because this route is also the most direct one from Phoenix to Las Vegas.) In October, the Joshua trees are in a state of distress after having gone through the brutal Arizona summers where temperatures in the desert can reach in excess of 110° and never get cooler than 100° at night.

This first picture was taken at about 4:30 pm as the sun was rapidly setting. I like the patterns that the many branches of the Joshua tree make against the blue sky.

My vantage point changed on the next photo. This is a different tree and I have included a hint of the mountains in the background. My position was below the tree in a ravine so the mountains were not prominently displayed. The sun was setting to the left side of center and back lit the tree and surrounding brambles.

Island of Kauai, HI

Last summer, my husband, Tom, and I vacationed on the island of Kauai, HI. We had been there before which helped me focus more on taking photographs and less on gawking like a tourist. The banner to this post was actually the view from our balcony at Shearwater in the town of Princeville. Enjoy these photos because we really did enjoy our stay on The Garden Island.

Kealia Beach is located north of the town of Kapa’a on the island of Kauai. This photo was taken from a bluff above the beach on a balmy, but windy, afternoon

It was great fun shooting photos of the beautiful sunset behind the pier at Hanalei Bay on Kauai.

Taro Fields “In the land of Hanalei” is a phrase from the song Puff the Magic Dragon. This is the land that was its inspiration. Visit there and you will see acres of taro, a Hawaiian food staple, growing in water-filled fields. Add balmy trade winds and beaches everywhere and it truly is a magical place.

Nurse’s Beach, named from scenes from the movie “South Pacific”, is a great place for a swim. In fact, many film companies use the majestic mountains and beautiful beaches of Kauai as locations for their movies–King Kong, Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean just to name a few.

Shots from Photo Walks

I was walking about at Tempe Town Lake Park (10/08) and noticed this bridge making a frame around the city of Phoenix skyline, so I snapped it. In retrospect, I am not very happy with the results. The sky was hazy and my lens was not long enough, so I will definitely go back to retake the picture on another day.

Further along the walk, the bright colors of this Ferris wheel caught my eye. I really love color.

My most recent photo walk (10/15), again at Tempe Town Lake, allowed a shot of this heron as it landed on the boat rental docks. I am trying to challenge myself by going back to shoot at familiar places. You never know what new images will present themselves.
